Brick fireplaces
On bare brick, one or two thin coats lighten the color and calm a strong red while the mortar lines stay readable. How heavily each coat is brushed, and whether it is washed back, sets how much red survives.

Austin Limewash Painting limewashes brick, stone and plaster fireplaces in Austin houses and condos. A full-height red brick or busy stone fireplace is often the darkest thing in a family room; limewash lightens it while the joints and texture stay visible, so it still looks like masonry, not a painted block.
The area is small but the detail is high: smoke stains, mantel and hearth protection, and a color judged against your floors and furniture. Fireplace work covers Austin and West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, Sunset Valley, Bee Cave, Pflugerville and Round Rock.

Only the outward faces get limewash: surround, chimney breast and hearth front. Fire scorches lime and blackens it with soot, so the firebox interior is left as it is. Smoke marks come off before the first coat, since pale lime would let them show.
The ring of brick or stone around the opening sees the most heat and smoke, and that is where the color shifts first; a quick recoat of that band usually sorts it. Whether the fireplace burns wood or holds a gas insert, follow the product maker’s guidance for masonry close to the opening.
A wood mantel shelf is masked or taken down during the work so it keeps its own finish. If the raised hearth doubles as a seat or a shelf for drinks, it gets a clear protective coat the maker approves 10 to 14 days later, once the lime has cured; otherwise its top can stay bare. Most family rooms suit warm whites, soft greiges and light clays; prop a sample board next to the floor and sofa before deciding.
